Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art
4 July 2026 – 4 April 2027
Close to Home began with a proposal from Niomi Fairweather and Rose McMurray from Baltic’s curatorial team. They told me that Baltic had long hoped to work with my mam’s archive, while also developing a new commission with local artist Kuba Ryniewicz — honouring her work while creating space for something new to grow alongside it.
I always trust my instincts with projects like this, and from the very beginning, this felt special. At its heart, the exhibition is a celebration of the people of the North East in the place where these stories belong.

This unique exhibition brings two powerful photographic voices into conversation, celebrating the enduring impact of Murtha’s work and presenting Ryniewicz’s dynamic new response in the city that shaped them both.
